Chinese courts have convicted 178 officers with crimes last year, said Thursday a senior official of the Department of Public Safety.

Zhu Chunlin, secretary of the Commission of Inspection of disciplines under the Ministry, said at a conference on corruption that officials had discovered 4 442 cases of violations of administrative disciplines and the Communist Party.

He added that the cases included the extortion of confessions by torture, abuse of firearms and other police instruments, pots of wine and irregularities in government procurement.

5 942 policemen were involved in cases, among which 3 044 were given administrative penalties and 858 have been punished according to regulations of the Chinese Communist Party.

He said business was down by 8.4% over 2005.

The department has sent 10 supervision groups in the base units to strengthen supervision and inspection of the regular work of the police.

This year, departments of public security must still improve their operations and continue the fight against corruption.
