China and Japan start 7th round of strategic dialogue in Beijing
The Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and his Japanese counterpart smiled and exchanged pleasantries before starting the 7th round of strategic dialogue in Beijing Thursday - a sure sign of warming relations between the two countries.
The Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Dai Bingguo and Japanese Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Yachi Shotaro are heading the two delegations to the conference three days.
“As participants in the dialogue, we’re both happy with the positive changes in bilateral relations,” said Dai Shotaro before beginning their conference behind closed doors.
Echoing the ideas of Mr. Dai, Shotaro joked that it was the first time he laughed during an interview with Chinese officials during the strategic dialogue.
The first strategic dialogue was conducted in May 2005 in Beijing.
“The strategic dialogue between China and Japan was initiated at a time when bilateral relations were facing great difficulties,” Dai noted during his opening dialogue, the hosts of Residence ‘Diaoyutai State.
“The strategic dialogue has played a positive role in removing political obstacles in bilateral relations and the delivery of relations on the right track,” said Dai.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid an historic visit to China last October, the first since he took office in September 2006. The visit of Mr. Abe was regarded by many as a turning point in Sino-Japanese relations.
