China: growth of the diamond trade

China recorded a record import and export of diamonds with a total value of $ 610 million in 2006, up 44.4% year on year.

The Diamond Exchange in Shanghai attributed the increase to the tax cut on diamond imports last year. This figure excludes the volume of processing trade.

On 1 July 2006, China has exempted from VAT the import of rough diamonds and lowered the tariff on imported diamond cut from 17% to 4%.

Imports diamond cut rose 194% during the second half of last year to $ 147 million dollars, according to the Diamond Exchange in Shanghai.

UK is currently the only legal way to import and export of diamond in China.

In 2006, the Diamond Exchange in Shanghai received 131 million yuan (16.8 million) of VAT on diamond imports, a slight decrease compared with 2005, according to statistics.
