The Chinese government assistance 700 000 homeless in 2006
More than 700 000 homeless and beggars in China have received last year a government assistance but that assistance could not cover all the needy.
Some 100 000 children were also receiving last year using 1 100 centers across the country and 130 centers for children, said Li Liguo, Vice Minister of Civil Affairs.
Li did not give the exact figure of homeless, but he has promised aid to more of them this year.
He said the government would improve the system of welfare centers through the experience last year and continue to assist the homeless in cities this year.
“We will not help only those in the centers but we also take the initiative to offer assistance to those in need this year,” said Mr. Li.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs will improve facilities centers this year and more branches will be opened in rural areas where congregate homeless.
The department will provide more support to NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) that help the homeless and the public about the places and services offered by these centers as well as laws and regulations on this subject, has announced Mr. Li.
“It is impossible to completely eliminate poverty in the cities but we will improve the system of centers and reduce disparities between regions to reduce the number of homeless.
