Israeli President Moshe Katsav called on Wednesday afternoon at the Knesset (Parliament) to declare temporary leave from the presidency following the charges of rape and sexual harassment against him, reported local media.

Katsav announced his intention in a letter to Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, reported the Israeli Channel 10. However, his application for leave must be approved by the Committee of the Knesset.

The president should announce his decision formally at 19h00 (17h00 GMT) at a press conference to be held at the Presidential Palace in Jerusalem.

Under Israeli law, the president can declare himself unable to perform its functions and request a leave of three months. During this period, he still enjoys political immunity and can not be charged.

This period of incapacity for three months should be completed once a final decision adopted on indictment, after Mr Katsav had presented his defense.

Earlier Wednesday, the Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said in a statement called for the resignation of Mr. Katsav.
