Kosovo: the death of two protesters injured in clashes with police in Pristina
Two Kosovo Albanian demonstrators died Sunday of wounds suffered Saturday in violent protests against the plan of UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari for the future status of Serbian province, police said Sunday the United Nations in Pristina, capital of Kosovo.
Two of four people received serious injuries Saturday when officers of the UN police and Kosovo have used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse thousands of Kosovo Albanian demonstrators protesting against the plan UN on a new status of the Serbian province, said Stephen Curtis, Commissioner of the UN police.
15 people were arrested Saturday for disturbing public order and peace during demonstrations organized by Albin Kurti, head of Self-Determination Movement, said Veton Elsani, spokesman for the police service in Kosovo.
Kosovo is under UN administration since 1999 following the NATO bombing to halt the crackdown of Serb forces against Albanian separatists, representing 90% of the population of the province who are demanding independence.
The Ahtisaari plan, unveiled this month, advocates a form of sovereignty under the supervision of an international mission, a compromise between Kosovo’s demand for total independence and the demand for sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia.
Negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo on the status of Kosovo must take place February 21 in Vienna. Ahtisaari hopes to present his plan to the Security Council of the United Nations in late March.
