The Israeli Minister of Defense Amir Peretz has called the United States to strengthen the financial pressure on Iran, reported Friday the local daily Jerusalem Post.

In an interview Thursday at the newspaper on the eve of his first visit to the United States, Mr. Peretz said that 2007 was crucial to stopping Iran through diplomatic channels and that Washington could play a key role in strengthening the financial pressure on Iran.

Peretz will leave Saturday night for New York where he will meet with Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon’s role in the peacekeeping force the UN in southern Lebanon and efforts to curb trafficking weapons between Syria and Hezbollah.

Peretz will also travel to Washington for a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, for a first meeting between the two defense chiefs.

Peretz held a series of meetings on the conflict that broke out Wednesday between Israeli troops and Lebanese, the first of their kind since the war last summer, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The Israeli Minister of Defense said in meetings that “the main problem is not on the Lebanese border, but on the Syrian border, where weapons are regularly sent to Hezbollah.”

“We simply can not ignore,” he said.
