Beijing requires that emergency messages are bilingual in public places with high attendance

Authorities in the Chinese capital Beijing have ordered more than 8,000 lively public places of the municipality to use both Chinese and English for the dissemination of emergency messages, said a city official for safety Tuesday.

This is part of a new safety regulations in public places adopted by the Beijing municipal government.

In case of emergency, public places such as malls, restaurants, hotels with stars, swimming pools, ski slopes and other places of entertainment will broadcast in both languages in all their premises, said Zhou Yuqiu, Head Office Municipal safety work.

Ms. Zhou said that companies should pay fines ranging from 5,000 to 20 000 yuan (640 to 2561 U.S. dollars) or shut down if they did not broadcast messages in both languages by April 1 when the regulations come in force.
