Israeli Prime Minister calls on President Katsav to resign
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday called President Moshe Katsav to resign.
Olmert made the call when he made a speech at the annual conference of Herzliya (north of Tel Aviv) on strategic issues in Israel, reported the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz on its website.
“I can not begin my speech without mentioning the events of the past 24 hours and the decision of the Attorney General to conduct a hearing to the President, in light of the possibility of inculpter” said Prime Minister.
“In these circumstances I have no doubt that the president can not continue to fulfill its obligation and will leave the presidential residence. It is a sad day for the State of Israel, “he said.
Meanwhile, President Katsav, accused of rape and sexual harassment, said he would fight to prove his innocence.
In a survey conducted by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, 89% of Israelis believe Katsav should resign immediately.
The Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Minister of Internal Security Avi Dichter also urged the president to resign.
